Black stone tiles in Nero Marquina, a dark marble with fine white veining, across two formats. The Bondi subway is 200 x 65mm and tumbled, while the Burleigh square tiles come tumbled or honed. Tumbling rounds the edges and knocks the face back to a matt, slightly worn look. The honed version stays flat and smooth, which reads more formal on a wall. Dark stone shows watermarks, soap film and dust more than a pale stone does, so it is easier to live with on a feature wall or a splashback than across a full bathroom floor. Grout choice matters here: a charcoal grout keeps the surface reading as one field, while a white grout puts the emphasis on the layout.
