Grey Tiles

Grey tiles can be cool and crisp, but the most interesting ones have a little warmth or movement in them. Look at the undertone first. A blue-grey feels very different beside oak from a greige or a cinder tone, even when the tiles look similar on a screen.

Find the shade that suits the light

Light grey tiles can keep a compact bathroom airy, particularly with warm white walls. Dark grey tiles give a wall or floor more weight and contrast. In a kitchen, the cabinet colour changes everything: grey beside walnut feels softer than grey beside bright white. Put the tile against the actual finishes before deciding where on that spectrum you want to land.

Material makes grey more interesting

Grey stone tiles carry variation from piece to piece. Grey marble tiles can bring stronger veining, while terrazzo look tiles give the colour a different, more playful texture. Porcelain stone-look surfaces can keep the wider floor quieter. Explore natural stone tiles and marble tiles if the movement in the material is what draws you in.

Give the floor and splashback different jobs

Grey floor tiles can ground a room without becoming its main feature. For a bathroom tile floor, decide on the product's specified floor use and finish first, then refine the tone. Grey kitchen splashback tiles can be more detailed: a mosaic or slim format catches the eye across a shorter stretch of wall. Browse floor tiles and kitchen splashback tiles for selections organised by application.

Frequently asked questions

Are grey tiles a good choice for a bathroom?

They can be, especially when the tone and finish suit the room's light and materials. For floors or wet areas, choose only a product specified for that exact application and review its slip information.

What colours go well with grey tiles?

Warm timber, creamy white and brushed metal can soften a cooler grey. A greige tone may sit more naturally with beige stone and oak. Compare the undertones together rather than choosing from colour names alone.

Can grey wall tiles be used on the floor?

Only when the individual tile is specified for floor use. Many wall tiles are not. Check the product details before planning a continuous wall-and-floor scheme.

Should you choose light or dark grey tiles?

Think about the room's daylight and the other large surfaces. Light grey keeps the palette softer; a darker tone gives more contrast. A sample beside your cabinetry, stone and paint will make that choice clearer.

Which grout colour works with grey tiles?

A grout close to the tile creates a calmer, more continuous surface. A lighter or darker grout gives the shape and layout more definition. Test the combination beside the actual tile, since a cool grey grout can read very differently from a warmer one.

How should grey tile samples be compared?

Place the samples beside the room's timber, paint, cabinetry and metal finishes, then view them in both daylight and evening light. Pay close attention to the undertone, since blue-grey, warm grey and greige can shift noticeably once they are in the room.
